Breeches buckles , such as our Oval Breeches Buckles, were worn by men of all social levels.  Considered to be necessary to the wearing of the garment, they were used on the knee band to secure the band tightly around the bottom of the knee. This gave a smooth appearance and held the stockings up at the same time.

Plain Oval Breeches Buckles were often used by the military in the 18th and 19th centuries, and were sometimes used by British units as a garter buckle. These plain Oval Breeches Buckles were appropriate for any social level.
